Messiness in photography, war and transitions to peace: Revisiting <i>Bosnia: Uncertain Paths to Peace</i>

During and after the wars in ex-Yugoslavia, Bosnia was a laboratory for new photographic approaches to war, violence civilian suffering. Among these approaches, Fred Ritchin Gilles Peress’s online photo essay, Bosnia: Uncertain Paths Peace (1996), emphasized interpretive openness, plurality of meaning, narrative non-linearity audience interaction, thus redefining as merits what photojournalism had formerly regarded liabilities. The project convincingly represented ongoing conflict’s multilayeredness vicissitudes transition peace: on day-to-day level, ambivalence ruled alliances shifted; chaos, confusion unpredictability prevailed. project’s users experience messiness through website’s overall organization which inhibits easy orientation, reproducing disorder. In grids, particular, non-sequitur panel-to-panel transitions illustrate lack sense it is traditionally understood. an important precursor current war photography, aiming acknowledge violent conflict rather than reducing simple but misleading narratives.
